Chapter Nine

Jaxon awakened at five after sleeping only a few hours. He’d been unable to rest when visions of Jaylyn had invaded his thoughts all night.

A picture of her standing in the moonlight, head tipped back, and a soft smile on her just-kissed lips would stay with him until his dying breath.

Holding her in his arms as they shared one intense kiss after another had been the single best experience he’d ever had, one that easily surpassed all his professional achievements. He’d thought about kissing her from the first day he’d set eyes on her. He’d dreamed of what it would feel like to hold her. But nothing he’d imagined came even remotely close to the divine reality of Jaylyn.

She was lovely. Intelligent. Hardworking. And kind. So incredibly kind and caring.

Last night, as they’d stood on the balcony watching the stars, he’d become increasingly enchanted with her, dazzled by her beauty, the warmth of her smile, the conversation they shared. For all their many differences, he’d noted they had an equal number of similarities.

Jaxon might never unravel what had possessed him to kiss Jaylyn, but he was glad he’d finally done it. He hadn’t planned it, but when the moment seemed too perfect to pass up, he’d been compelled to sample her lips. She’d tasted like the berry cake they’d eaten, and a sweetness that was all her own.

Her fragrance, something soft and feminine that made him think of Christmas, filled his nose, while the feel of her in his arms filled his heart so full, he was sure it overflowed.

Thoughts of going to church with her or meeting her later had kept him tossing and turning, as had every replay of their conversations and the kisses they’d shared.

Never in his life had he enjoyed a day more. The problem, he realized, was that he didn’t want just one day with Jaylyn. He wanted thousands of them.

Regardless of what he wanted or wished for, he wasn’t the marrying type. He had a singular purpose in his life, and it was his research and the development of Christmas trees. Nothing else.

Besides, even if he were inclined to think of a future with a wife in it, he’d be terrible husband material. His parents had been an awful example of a loving couple. They were as cold and distant with each other as they were with him. That wasn’t what Jaxon wanted in a wife, or any relationship for that matter.

Additionally, he could get so intently focused on work that he blocked out everything else, like eating and sleeping. A wife wouldn’t appreciate it. An absentminded father who let something tragic happen because he was analyzing soil samples from trees instead of keeping them safe was no way to raise children.

He had to remain single.

Yet, the thought of spending the rest of his life alone seemed too lonely, too sad, too depressing, especially now that he’d met Jaylyn.

Even if a long-term relationship with her was a possibility, one that led to marriage
